Introduction to Buddhist Meditation
with Ashvini Shekhar
(from September 4th 2023)
The teachings on the Four Noble Truths clearly distinguish two sets of causes and effects: those causes which produce suffering, and those which produce happiness. By showing us how to distinguish these in our own lives, the teachings aim at nothing less than to enable us to fulfil our deepest aspiration – to be happy and to overcome suffering.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama, The Four Noble Truths. HarperCollins Publishers. Kindle Edition.
At the age of 35, on the banks of river Niranjana at Bodhgaya, Shakyamuni Buddha, attained enlightenment. Moved by his great compassion to teach what he had discovered about the true nature of existence and the way to live a truly happy life, he gave his first teachings on the Four Noble Truths at Sarnath, on the banks of Ganges at the outskirts of the city of Varanasi.
The Buddha’s teachings pointed toward the true nature of the universe, what is known within Buddhism as the Dharma.
On Monday nights in September, we will spend time investigating what the Shakyamuni Buddha said at Sarnath, and how it applies to our own lives thousands of years later.
A facility fee is requested ($5 - current financial members free) to help cover administration costs. Just turn up at 7:50pm
The atmosphere on Monday nights is relaxed and open and people are welcome to join us for one or all of these sessions this month. No need to register; just come along.
